BURLINGTON, Vt. – The University of Vermont men’s lacrosse team recently took part in the 2013 Northeast Classic lacrosse tournament on October 12-13 at Thayer Academy’s off campus fields in Braintree, Mass. The event helped raise nearly $24,000 this year, with all the money being donated to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute for cancer research.

Teams from throughout the northeast partook in this year’s event, as there was a Division II/III tournament on Oct. 12 followed by Division I contests on Oct. 13. In addition to the college teams, there were men’s club and U13 youth club teams participating as well.

The organization also hosted a golf tournament in September, with the proceeds going to the Inspirational Families Program, which donates VIP game experiences, lacrosse apparel, lacrosse merchandise, equipment and money to local families overcoming and surviving cancer. These families were also invited to the lacrosse tournament and treated to a day of lacrosse from the sidelines, while also getting to hang out and spend time with student-athletes from the UVM team.

In 2007, following a cancer diagnosis to a member of the University of Vermont men’s lacrosse team, the organization was created in hopes of raising money for cancer research and spreading awareness for preventative measures. They held their first lacrosse tournament in the fall of 2008 to support the cause, and since then have continued to raise money for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute annually.
