EDISION, N.J. (4/13/2015) — After helping the Titans win a huge conference game, the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) announced on Monday that freshman Mark Anstead (Potomac, Md. / Gonzaga) is the Rookie of the Week, while sophomore Jason Weber (Whitby, Ont. / Christ School (N.C.) is the Defensive Player of the Week.
For Anstead, it is the fourth time this year that he has earned the Rookie of the Week and the fifth time he has earned an award from the MAAC as he was also the Offensive Player of the Week in late February.
Meanwhile, the accolade marks the fourth time this season that Weber has been tabbed with the defensive honor.
Both players were instrumental in leading the Titans to a come-from-behind victory against Monmouth. Trailing 8-4 going into the fourth, Detroit ended the game on a 5-0 run to clip the Hawks, 9-8.
Anstead finished the game with two goals and an assist, including the game-winning marker with 2:18 left in the game. His assist also came in the big fourth-quarter charge as he set up freshman Sean Birney‘s goal, and he started the scoring on the day with an unassisted strike just five minutes into the contest.
One of the top freshman scorers in the nation, Anstead is currently leading the team with 13 assists and is tied for first in points (31) and second in goals (18). He is fourth in the MAAC with 1.18 assists per game, tied for sixth recording 2.82 points per game and ninth with 1.64 goals per game.
Weber made eight saves in between the pipes for the Titans and helped pitch a shutout in the fourth so the red, white and blue could make their comeback. Three of his saves were in the fourth, including one with under 45 seconds left as Monmouth had a man-up opportunity. He also had four ground balls and a caused turnover.
The reigning Defensive Player of the Year leads the nation with 14.91 saves per game, is second in the MAAC and third in the country with a 60.7 save percentage and is third in the league with a 9.84 goals against average.
Detroit is 6-5 on the season and 2-2 in the league as it heads to Siena (5-6, 2-2 MAAC) on Saturday, April 18, in another key league game.
