Dwyer’s Record-Setting Performance Helps No. 10/13 Harvard Men’s Lacrosse to 20-9 win at No. 20/20 Holy Cross

WORCESTER, Mass. – Devin Dwyer enjoyed a record-setting day as the No. 10/13 Harvard men’s lacrosse team went on the road to defeat No. 20/20 Holy Cross Monday afternoon, 20-9.

Dwyer matched the program records for points in a game and assists in a game, turning in 12 total points on four goals and eight assists. The junior’s 12 points represent the second-highest total in the NCAA this season while his eight assists are the most this year. Dwyer’s eight helpers also moved his career total to 80, jumping him into seventh place in program history.

Deke Burns matched Dwyer with four goals for his third hat trick of the season. Tim Edmonds, Joe Lang, Murphy Vandervelde and Will Walker each contributed two scores apiece, with Ian Ardrey, Walker Kirby, Sean McDonagh and Matt Ryan adding one.

Harvard’s defense allowed the Crimson to run away with the game as it allowed just nine goals for the second straight game. Bryan Moore earned the win in goal to improve to 4-0 on the year, stopping eight shots while allowing seven goals in 52:14 of action. Aiding Moore in the defensive third was Jack Breit who collected five ground balls and caused two turnovers. Ryan also contributed three ground balls and two caused turnovers, while Brendan Newman forced three turnovers.

With the win, Harvard improves to 4-1 on the year while Holy Cross falls to 3-3. The Crimson will return to action Saturday, March 14 as it opens Ivy League play at Brown. Face off is scheduled for 3 p.m. live on the Ivy League Digital Network.

For the second straight game, Harvard took a 4-0 lead out of the gates with Lang scoring on the man-advantage off a feed from Dwyer just 51 seconds in. Walker, Burns and Dwyer followed suit before a pair of Holy Cross tallies made it a 4-2 game. Burns and Kirby responded in the second quarter to regain a four-goal advantage, but three successive scores by the Crusaders closed the margin to 6-5 at the break.

Harvard erupted for six goals in the third, pushing its margin to 12-7. Dwyer tallied two goals and three assists during the period while Burns, McDonagh, Ardrey and Lang also found the back of the net.

The Crimson continued its run in the fourth, scoring seven consecutive goals to put the game out of reach. Six different student-athletes combined on the seven goals, with Vandervelde notching two.
