Grip ‘N Rip: Greg Coholan, University of Virginia

Greg Coholan

University of Virginia senior midfielder, Greg Coholan, made everyone stop and turn their eyes towards him last season when he willed an injury plagued UVA team to a first round home game in the NCAA playoffs. With so many players on both ends of the field injured last season, he switched between attack and midfield to pick up the slack on the offensive end. Greg, a Rochester native, was one point off from doubling is point total from the season previous. He has been a consistent starter since is redshirt freshman season, and USILA Honorable Mention, and aims to continue his success going into his senior year.

What head and shaft are you using?

I use the warrior EVOX head and the Warrior Burn Pro shaft

Do you string your own sticks? If not, who does?

I do string my own sticks

What kind of pocket are you using?

  • Mesh: String King Type 2s
  • Pocket placement: Mid to Low
  • Shooters: 1 shooter and one nylon two rows above the shooter
  • Whip: 4/10

How do you tape your sticks?

I tape my stick about 1/3 of the way up the shaft. Then put three separate tape pieces at the top to add grip when I carry my stick one-handed

You had to adjust to the 2013 NCAA shooting string rule, how did you go about it? Was it a hassle?

I had a little trouble finding a pattern I liked to use at first. Then I actually copied my older brother Drew’s EVOX when he was playing at Hofstra and never changed after that. Overall, the rule hasn’t affected much, just took a little time to find where to place my shooters.

Any superstitions or funny stories?

Not really other than I string and tape my sticks the same exact way since the rule change

Last season you went back and forth between midfield and attack, did anything change in your sticks?

I did not have to change anything in my stick when I switched from midfield to attack. I string my sticks in a way so the ball sits low when I carry one handed and has a quick release for tight passing or shooting.

How has the switch from Gait to Brine been going?

The switch has been going well. The Warrior staff has been great in getting us gear and sticks as soon as they can. I am excited to get the whole new set of gear and be able to have as many EVOXs as needed.

Did you see Star Wars?

Absolutely! Unreal movie that everyone should see.
