When I write these little paragraphs describing the accolades of players featured, I normally start by looking at what their respective universities have to say about them. The process was no different when I started writing Zack Greer’s article, but after a quick glance of his three years at Duke University, this might be a little long. The Whitby, Ontario native, Zach Greer, is an all out scoring machine on the field and in the box. He is the current NCAA all-time leader in goals scored (206 in 67 games played) and led the nation in scoring in 2005, ’07, and ’08. He has received two USILA First Team All-American honors, multiple All-ACC honors, and helped Duke reach two National Championship appearances. Professionally, Zack has continued to excel in both the NLL and MLL. In the NLL he has totaled 196 goals and 344 points in his career.
What head and shaft are you using?
UA Unleashed Box head with an old UA shaft that has Edmonton Rush graphics on it.
Do you string your own sticks? If not, who does?
Yes, I have since I was a kid.
What kind of pocket are you using?
- Mesh- ECD Semi soft
- Pocket placement- High pocket
- Shooters- 4 straight across
- Whip- Just a little
How do you tape your sticks?
Knob on the bottom with tape going about 6 inches up from there.
Why do you like this set up? (tape and stringing)
I need to be able to feel the bottom on the shaft, but don’t like the weight of tape all the way up. I like a high pocket because it allows for a quick release. I can also make quick passes with the flick of my wrist, crucial for box lacrosse.
Does your box setup differ from your field setup?
Slightly. My box head is pinched a little more than my field head. Mainly because that is was the rules dictate.
How has your stick changed since college?
Not a whole lot to be honest. Probably a little narrower now, I also toyed around with 3 straight shooters and 1 V shooter back in the day.
Any superstitions or funny stories?
I am more of a routine guy than a superstition guy. I’ll pre-game nap with my stick next to be, bring up top on the bus. Generally treat it well and it will treat me well. I also have a Starbucks Blonde Roast before every game, saving a little bit for that halftime pick-me-up.
What is your favorite piece of equipment aside from your stick?
Probably my helmet keeping my head safe. Although, it let me down recently. I dig all gear, shoes, gloves, you name it.
What is your wall ball routine?
Honestly, I’m not a big wall-ball guy. I definitely encourage young players to get on the wall to work on that consistency and hand-eye coordination, but I get more out of shooting game like shots on a net in the park. I’d prefer to take 100 shots that 100 passes on a wall.
