PRINCETON, N.J. – A 9-4 run by No. 13 Princeton in the final 23 minutes doomed the Harvard women’s lacrosse team, as the Crimson fell on the road in an Ivy League contest to the Tigers, 17-12.
Marisa Romeo led Harvard (3-3, 1-1 Ivy) with four goals and an assist, while Julia Glynn added a hat trick and Megan Hennessey dished out three assists. Emma Ford led the Crimson by grabbing three ground balls. Kelly Weis played most of the game in net and finished with one save.
Princeton (6-1, 2-0) was led by Olivia Hompe, who tallied five goals, Erin Slifer (four goals, two assists) and Stephanie Paloscio (three goals, three assists). Goalie Ellie DeGarmo recorded 11 stops.
The Crimson trailed for the first few minutes of the game before Hennessey sent a pass to Burke to knot the game at the 23:41 mark. With the Tigers leading, 3-1, Burke cut the deficit to one goal with her second tally of the game at 18:38. With 10:26 remaining in the half, Romeo kept the Crimson within one score off Hennessey’s second assist of the period, 4-3.
Romeo struck again with 8:06 remaining to make it a 5-4 game, and less than one minute later Guild found the back of the net at 7:19, tying the game, 5-5. Romeo won the ensuing draw control and made a pass to Guild who put the Crimson on top for the first time at 7:04, 6-5. In the final minute of the opening period, Princeton earned the equalizer off the stick of Erika Grabbi with 52 seconds remaining.
In the second half, the Tigers and Crimson traded the first five goals of the stanza. Princeton went up, 7-6, at 26:12, but Glynn made it 7-7 just 48 seconds later. Glynn tied the game again, 8-8, at the 24:34 mark, but the Tigers netted the game’s next three goals to grab an 11-8 advantage with 19:29 to go.
After Princeton notched two more goals to go up, 13-8, Glynn cut it to 13-9 with 17:57 remaining, and then Romeo scored her third goal of the game at the 15:41 mark, making it a three-goal contest.
The Tigers added two more goals down the stretch to extend their lead to 15-10. Maeve McMahon got Harvard back in the scoring column with 5:17 to play, 15-11, as Hennessey assisted on her third tally of the game. Romeo added her fourth goal of the game with 30 seconds remaining, 16-12, but the Crimson could not inch closer.
Harvard was 9-of-11 on clear attempts, and owned an advantage in draw controls, 16-15. Princeton outshot the Crimson, 29-25, and had the edge in ground balls, 17-11.
The Crimson will return home to host No. 9 Stanford Friday, March 27 at 7 p.m. The game will be shown live on ESPN3 and the Ivy League Digital Network.
