Penn Quakers Announce Doug Knight as Assistant Coach

PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania’s Head Coach of Men’s Lacrosse, Mike Murphy, has announced the hiring of Doug Knight as a member of his staff.

“We are very excited to bring Coach Knight to the Penn men’s lacrosse program,” said Murphy. “Doug brings with him tremendous experience both as a player and as a coach. As a former National Player of the Year and national championship assistant coach, he will have a great deal to contribute to our offense and our attackmen specifically. But even more valuable than his experience is Doug’s intelligence and his ability to build rapport with players and impart valuable insights, both on and off the field. We very much look forward to Coach Knight’s contributions.”

“I have been watching the Penn Men’s lacrosse program closely for two years now, and am incredibly excited to join the staff,” said Knight. “It has been great to watch this team mature in the last few years, and I am looking forward to assisting Cory Coffman with the offense. I had some terrific coaches over the years, and I am hopeful that I can have as positive an effect on the Penn players as my coaches had on me.”

Knight currently works at the Haverford School, where he is the Associate Director of Admission and Tuition Assistance. He also served as Haverford’s ice hockey coach and was an assistant coach with the lacrosse program which was voted the high school national champion last year. Knight has also served as a middle school math teacher and middle school athletic director at Haverford.

Prior to arriving at Haverford, Knight was at St. Paul’s School For Boys in Maryland, where he was a head coach for the varsity ice hockey and lacrosse programs as well as the middle school soccer and ice hockey programs.

Knight was a member of the University of Virginia’s men’s lacrosse program from 1993-97, captaining the 1997 squad. He was the National Player of the Year in 1996 and a three-time All-America from 1995-97. He played on two teams that were NCAA runner-up, in 1994 and 1996.

Following his UVA career, Knight played professionally in Major League Lacrosse for the Boston Cannons and Philadelphia Barrage. He was also an assistant coach at UVA for a few seasons, including 1999 when the Cavaliers won the NCAA title. Knight was recently elected to the Virginia Chapter of the Lacrosse Hall of Fame and will be inducted in February.

A two-time ACC Academic Honor Roll member, Knight earned his bachelor’s degree in Anthropology at Virginia. He is currently enrolled in the Masters of Education School Leadership Program at Penn, expecting to graduate from that program in May.

Under Murphy, who enters his third season running the Penn program, the Quakers went 8-7 last year and earned a spot in the NCAA Championship field. Three players from that squad were subsequently drafted by Major League Lacrosse teams. The Red and Blue were picked 14th in this season’s Inside Lacrosse Preseason National Poll, and will open their season on Friday, Feb. 24 at Duke. The home opener comes four days later against Lehigh.
