Tampa Pull Out a Victory Over Saint Leo

SAINT LEO, Fla. – The University of Tampa Spartans men’s lacrosse team traveled up to Saint Leo to take on the Saint Leo University Lions in a conference matchup. The two teams played a close matchup, as the Spartans prevailed by a final score of 10-9. Tampa now moves to 10-1 overall and 3-0 in SSC play. Saint Leo falls to 6-5 overall and 0-2 in conference play.

Junior Mike Morris led the way for the Spartans, as he was able to net three goals to go along with an assist. While junior Jake Schmidt also contributed with three goals on five shots. Sophomore Steve Reall ignited the UT offense as he dished out a game high three assists.

Nick Ferreiro was key in face offs, as he won 13-20 attempts, while picking up nine ground balls. A.J. Arnold collected six saves for Tampa.

Chad Marino led the way for the Lions as he racked up five goals.

After Marino scored the first goal for SLU, UT responded with back-to-back goals from Morris, while Ferreiro added a goal to to finish the first quarter with a 3-1 lead. In the second quarter the teams exchanged goals, as each team was able to add three in the quarter, to send the game into halftime with a Tampa 6-4 lead.

Ferreiro and Morris scored goals within 30 seconds of each other to build their biggest lead of the game at 8-4. Saint Leo would then mount a comeback, as they scored three consecutive goals to pull within one at 9-8 at the 7:42 mark of the fourth quarter. Tampa answered back with a Conor Whipple goal to seal the victory for the Spartans.

UT was able to outshoot SLU by a 45-35 margin. Each team was able to pick up 27 ground balls on the afternoon. Tampa also controlled the face-offs, as they won 13 of 22.

Tampa returns to action Wednesday, as they travel to Painsville, Ohio to take on the No. 1 ranked Lake Erie College Storm. The game is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
