The Hardest Lacrosse Hit You’ll See Today

Editor’s Note: This was a malicious(arguable), illegal hit. We obviously do not condone these types of hits, but we do publish them. We never wish ill-will on any player. The player appears to be OK. That said, enjoy.

A big helmet-to-helmet hit in the Johns Hopkins vs. Virginia game last weekend occurred when Blue Jay Rob Guida got bopped by Virginia’s Pat Harbeson. The Referees called it a one minute non-releasable penalty, but Quint Kessenich wanted an ejection. We are glad Guida is OK. What do you think? Comment below and let us know your thoughts.

    Absolutely  clean! If
you want to take hitting out of the game take the equipment away? Or have the
    kids (parents) play soccer

After he lost the stick the hit was bad, but his shoulder hits first then his head comes to the chin. Watch real close and click the Play button quickly so its almost a frame-by-frame.  Not the best play, but some guys like to hit first and then go for the ball at least he picked it up.  I have the same problem when I get hit I’m 6’3 I get a shoulder hit that ends up on my head, you try to hit up to get better leverage. I would agree that at D1 you should be abel to stop after a guy loses his stick and turns his head.

  7. R-Lax on March 28, 2012 at 12:27 pm

Never agree with a head to head…  should the Hopkins players helmet come off? NO!  You are playing a highly agressive game at an elevated level, put your equipment on the right way and play!  If there was no head to head on this I call loose ball push…

  24. TrashTalker on March 27, 2012 at 11:56 pm

Absolutely not an ejection!! This could be deemed a penalty but it is still debatable. The player clearly ducks into the hit. Lacrosse players are taught to slide with the body.  Physicality is part of the game of lacrosse and why we wear the protective equipment. There are already very few big hits in the game compared to other contact sports such as football and ice hockey.

  25. Mottacross195 on March 27, 2012 at 11:47 pm

i say that was a fair clean hit, hockey and football got the same thing going if not more dangerous. I think there is nothing to be argued about over this play.

dirty hit? YES. The ball was clearly on the ground and the hit was unnecessary. But not too bad for the ejection

Lose ball push is only thing I see… He came head on and ya his hands were apart but cmon Wat ref calls that far apart a cross check and he didn’t make a lot of contact with his head he just got low to push up I don’t think that’s a penalty

He hit him with a lowered shoulder not with his stick and the middie was driving with a slide coming. We play division 1 lacrosse for a reason and know its more high contact. 1 min penalty is all that was worth

    • Magzz on March 28, 2012 at 3:04 pm

your are completely stupid. He drove with his head, I hope you get drilled with a head to head hit and end your career, jackass.

The reason why he lost his helmet is because it was not fit correctly in the first place, plus the chin strap was probably loose and not cinched down. Everyone wants that laxbro look with floppy helmet and loose chin strap. All that spells is a busted dome piece.

  57. FS on March 27, 2012 at 7:55 pm

I love how Guida kept his composure.  As mentioned, he came back and banged a goal.  Ejection, no.  One minute non releasable…eh..  I mean, you get a longer penalty with an illegal stick…

Would’ve been a great hit if Pat hadn’t dropped his head. Quint’s a Hopkins homer. Ejection? C’mon Quint.

  67. Guest on March 27, 2012 at 7:29 pm

defenseless player without stick.   hit was cowardly and could have concussed guida or worse.  3 minutes unreleasable and ejection with subsequent suspension. these are division 1 athletes with great reflexes and body control.  seeing game and watching video, harbeson clearly has the time to assess the situation and adjust.  these kinds of hits clearly have no place in the game.  they can be both career ending and life altering.  i am both a coach and physician.  if someone on my team had done this, he would be asked to pack up his gear and not return to the team.

    • Johnny Joe on March 27, 2012 at 8:45 pm

Let me guess, you coach in CA? Helmet to helmet yes. Penalty yes. Ejection and kicked off the team, give me a break. 1. The Hopkins player needs to buckle his chin strap, helmets should not come off that easy. 2. Its a contact sport and players are going to make mistakes, especially in a game of that magnitude. 3. Play/coach golf or tennis if you don’t want to see people getting hit.

      • LukePeterson7 on March 28, 2012 at 2:42 pm

        1. CA produces just as good of talent as anywhere else. doesn’t matter where you’re from if you’re sick you’re sick. 2. you’re right it’s DEFINITELY the hopkins players fault… not. 3. harbeson should have just wrapped his arms around hopkins because it was a tackle.

  68. OT2O on March 27, 2012 at 7:25 pm

Lead with his left should and his head was up he put his face mask into him. Hands were apart but he didn’t crosscheck him he lead with his body.

  69. Sean b on March 27, 2012 at 6:47 pm

he didn’t even have his stick and the guy who hit him watched it happen, I could understand tossing him, but at least a 2min non releasable.

Definitely a slash, the hit looks clean to me though. Ball carrier loses his balance and ducks his head, nothing the defender can do about it.
