U.S. Women’s National Team Cruises into World Cup Semifinals with 20-1 Win

OSHAWA, Ontario, July 18 – The U.S. Women’s National Team turned in a dominant effort in the quarterfinals of the Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) World Cup, defeating the Haudenosaunee 20-1. Team USA will square off against the winner of the quarterfinal match between England and Wales, and is two wins from earning its record seventh world title.

Danielle Etrasco (Boston University) put the U.S. on the board first just 43 seconds into the contest, and scored four of the game’s first seven goals as the Americans raced out to a 7-0 lead in the game’s first ten minutes. Nine players scored in the first half, including three goals from Katrina Dowd (Northwestern University), who leads the team with 26 points (20g, 6a) through five games. Team USA led 15-0 at halftime.

The U.S. defense held the Haudenosaunee scoreless for 53:46 before Awehiyo Thomas scored a free-position shot with 6:44 remaining in the second half. Team USA surrendered just three Haudenosaunee shots, and has allowed just 4.2 goals per game through five games.

Etrasco finished with a game-high five goals to go with one assist. Katie Rowan (Syracuse University) scored one goal and dished out five assists to earn player of the match honors. Team USA defenders Holly Reilly and Kristen Carr each tallied their first points of the tournament, with first and second half goals, respectively. Kelly Berger (James Madison University) chipped in with two goals and two assists, while Kristin Igoe (Boston College) and Lindsey Munday (Northwestern University) contributed three points in the win.

Dowd continues to chase Munday’s U.S. record for points in a tournament (37), and needs twelve points to pass her teammate’s mark set in 2009. Dowd’s 20 goals in the tournament are tied for second in U.S. history, trailing only Quinn Carney, who posted 24 goals in the 2005 World Cup.

Team USA (5-0), the lone undefeated team remaining in the tournament, will face the winner of the quarterfinal match between fourth-seeded England (1-3) and fifth-seeded Wales (0-4) in Friday’s 11:30 a.m. ET semifinal. The FIL World Cup gold medal game is scheduled for 3 p.m. ET on Saturday, July 20.
