Governing Body Supports HBCU Lacrosse All-Star Classic

All Black Lacrosse Team Makes Historic Debut

BALTIMORE, October 31, 2013 — In keeping with its strategic plan to expand lacrosse participation and increase diversity and inclusion efforts in the game, US Lacrosse has committed its support to the initial HBCU Lacrosse All-Star Classic, November 17 at Howard University’s Greene Stadium in Washington, D.C.

The doubleheader event will begin with a high school all-star game at 1 p.m., to be followed by a college all-star game at 3 p.m. The college game will feature a North-South showdown, with players from Howard University and Morgan State University forming the core of the North squad, and players from Hampton University and Morehouse College anchoring the South team. Event organizers hope to have 120 participants in the two games, including additional college participants from other HBCU teams. Admission to the event is free.

Interested high school and college participants may apply online at http://hbculacrosse.wix.com/hbculax.

“US Lacrosse is committed to expanding participation for all and growing the game responsibly,” said Eboni Preston, associate director of diversity and inclusion at US Lacrosse. “We’re excited to see the efforts of the HBCU Lacrosse Consortium in bringing this event together, and we’re pleased to have an opportunity to be involved with the event.”

In addition to being on-site at Howard University and providing promotional giveaways to attendees, US Lacrosse has secured certified officials for both games and has pledged to provide complementary US Lacrosse membership for each of the players and coaches in both all-star games.

Players and coaches will be able to utilize their membership for access to US Lacrosse instructional clinics and professional development seminars throughout the coming year, and will also be eligible for grants and programs that further support the growth of the game. Additional membership benefits include a subscription to Lacrosse Magazine, playing and coaching drills and tips, on-field insurance coverage, and more.

The purpose of the HBCU Lacrosse Consortium is to provide the athletes, staff and faculty who love lacrosse at Historically Black Colleges & Universities with the opportunity to see and participate at a high level of college lacrosse by establishing a competitive outlet for lacrosse on HBCU campuses. This includes both club and varsity options.

“We’ve had a great response to this event from the community and great cooperation from the representatives of Howard University, our host venue,” said Rick Perry, a member of the HBCU Consortium. “We really hope that this event will serve as a catalyst to grow the game within the HBCU community.”

Since its inception in 1998, US Lacrosse has supported and led efforts to expand the sport to underserved and underrepresented communities throughout the country. Among a number of initiatives, dozens of US Lacrosse financial and program grants are awarded annually to introduce the sport to new participants and audiences.

US Lacrosse seeks to foster a national lacrosse community that encourages understanding, appreciation and acceptance of all within its membership, volunteer base, and staff, and believes that broad representation and participation add significant value to the lacrosse experience of all.
