Harvard Men’s Lacrosse Wraps Up Fall Season Against Army and St. John’s

The Harvard men’s lacrosse team will put a bow on its fall season this weekend when it faces Army and St. John’s in a pair of scrimmages at Army’s Michie Stadium. The Crimson will first take the field against the Black Knights of Army at 12:45 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 20, and will then faceoff against the Red Storm at 2:00 p.m.

Let’s Get You Caught Up To Speed
Harvard began fall practice on Sept. 17 and will wrap up its month-long training session this weekend against Army and St. John’s. In that time, Harvard’s coaching staff has worked to integrate its 10 freshmen into the fold while refining the play of its 33 returning letter winners. The Crimson is seeking to replace three starters from a year ago, including attackmen Jeff Cohen ’12 (48-8-56) and Kevin Vaughan ’12 (17-19-36) who combined for 92 points.

Push the Pace
Under the guidance of assistant strength and conditioning coach Tim Mullen, the Crimson has pushed the pace this fall both in the weight room and on the field.

Trading Crimson for Gold
With the help of three Harvard men’s lacrosse players, Team USA defeated Canada, 10-8, July 21 to capture the gold medal at the 2012 FIL U19 World Championship.

Sophomore defenseman Stephen Jahelka, who served as a captain of Team USA, sophomore midfielder Sean Mahon and junior attackman Daniel Eipp aided the squad in winning three straight elimination games en route to the gold medal. Team USA downed Germany, 22-2, in the quarterfinals, topped the Iroquois Nation, 12-7, in the semifinal round, before earning the gold medal by defeating Canada. Eipp scored nine goals in the tournament, including one in the championship game against Canada.

Look Who’s Back
The Crimson returns 33 letterwinners from last year’s squad including three of its top five point scorers, its top two defenders and top two goalkeepers. Junior Daniel Eipp is the squad’s top returning scorer after he notched 42 points on 24 goals and 18 assists as a sophomore. Eipp ranked 47th in the NCAA in points per game (3.00), 50th in assists per game (1.29) and 76th in goals per game (1.71). He will be joined on the attack by classmate Carl Zimmerman (5-6-11) and sophomore Will Walker (15-6-21).

Senior captain Jason Gonos and sophomore Stephen Jahelka will anchor the defensive unit. Jahelka led the team in caused turnovers with 17, good for 53rd in the nation, while tying Gonos for second on the squad with 33 ground balls. Sophomore Keegan Michel ranked 11th in the NCAA in face-off win percentage at 59.6 percent (140-235) and collected a team-leading 59 ground balls.

Captain Crim
Senior defenseman Jason Gonos was voted as the team’s captain for the 2013 season. Gonos is the 151st captain in program history and the first individual to serve as captain since Jeff Psaki ’00 in 2000.

“Jason is a young man of impeccable character and is an outstanding leader,” commented Chris Wojcik, the Frisbie Family Head Coach for Harvard Men’s Lacrosse. “The program is fortunate to have Jason as our Captain and I am looking forward to working closely with him over the course of the year… CONTINUE READING
