Richmond Names Tri-Captains for 2015 Men’s Lacrosse Campaign

RICHMOND — Richmond men’s lacrosse announced three captains for the 2015 campaign, the second in program history. The 2014 Atlantic Sun Champion Spiders will be captained by redshirt junior Alex Hatem (Syracuse, New York), junior Brendan Hynes (Mahopac, New York) and Tom Monzo (Flourtown, Pennsylvania) next season.

“Our team is in good hands with Alex, Brendan, and Tom as our trio of captains,” said Richmond head coach Dan Chemotti. “They have done a great job of leading with their words and their actions, from the moment they stepped on this campus. Our staff has a tremendous amount of trust and confidence in them to lead, inspire, and mentor their peers around them on a daily basis.”

A member of the 2014 All-Atlantic Sun Tournament team, Hatem was one of 10 players to appear in all 17 games last season and only one of six players to turn in 15 or more goals for the season, ending at 19. The midfielder tied the season high with four goals in a single game, finding the back of the net four times in the A-Sun Tournament opener against Mercer at Mercer in May. He also scored the game-winning goal with 31 seconds remaining to beat Jacksonville 13-12 at home on April 20.

Hynes earned Second-Team All-Atlantic Sun Conference and a spot on the A-Sun All-Freshman team last year by leading the squad in long pole goals, with two and adding four assists. He led the team in ground balls (78) and caused turnovers (35), and finished second in the A-Sun and seventh in the NCAA with 2.06 caused turnovers per game. He also played in all 17 games last year, starting the last 15 of the season for the Spiders.

Monzo tied for second on the team with 16 games started, missing only the regular-season finale at VMI. The defenseman was fourth on the team with 20 caused turnovers, setting his season high of three in the Mercer game of the A-Sun Tournament. He was tied for fifth on the squad with 30 ground balls, collecting four in the NCAA Tournament game at Air Force on May 7.

The Spiders return all 16 players, including the top 13 point-scorers, that played at least 15 of the 17 games last season and eight more players who saw action in 2014 to add to the 14 newcomers added to the roster so far this fall. The Spiders along with the Atlantic Sun teams are moving league operations under the Southern Conference umbrella in 2015, adding Bellarmine to the conference. Richmond starts the season with a home date against Saint Joseph’s on Saturday, February 7 with the opening faceoff at Robins Stadium scheduled for 1 p.m.
