LOUISVILLE, Ky. (2/27/2015) — Senior Shayne Adams (St. Catharines, Ont. / Denis Morris) became the school’s all-time points leader and sophomore Jason Weber (Whitby, Ont. / Christ School (N.C.) made a season-high 19 saves, but a second-half rally came up short as the University of Detroit Mercy men’s lacrosse team was downed by No. 16/17 Marquette, 12-6, on Friday afternoon at the Midwest Classic.

The event is being hosted by Bellarmine University at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium and features the Titans, Knights, Golden Eagles and Ohio State.

Adams had two goals on the day giving him 147 career points, passing former teammate and current assistant coach Alex Maini for the school record. He also owns the Titan goal record with 126.

Weber’s 19 stops was the second most in his career after the 23 he had against Marist last season. He also had two ground balls.

Marquette (4-0) jumped out to a 7-0 lead about 20 minutes into the game before the Titans (2-2) could get on the board. When they finally did, it was Adams who got the offense going as he took a pass from senior Brandon Beauregard (Clarkston, Mich. / Notre Dame Prep) and buried it in the back of the net.

UDM trailed 8-1 at the half, but came out strong in the third with three-straight markers. Senior Mike Birney (Plymouth, Mich. / Catholic Central) got the first one off a pass from freshman Mark Anstead (Potomac, Md. / Gonzaga). B. Beauregard then notched a goal and Anstead came right back with an unassisted score to pull the red, white and blue within four, 8-4, with 10:38 left in the period.

The Golden Eagles would stave off that charge and take a 10-4 lead, but back came Detroit as senior Scott Drummond (Birmingham, Mich. / Seaholm) beat the goalie late in the third. Adams then came up with his record breaker with 11:27 on the clock in the fourth to cut the deficit to four, 10-6.

That was as close as Detroit would get with Marquette coming up with a couple of big stops before extending the advantage.

Adams also had four ground balls tying for the team lead with junior Damien Hicks (Copiague, N.Y. / Copiague). Senior Chris Shevins (Merrick, N.Y. / Mepham) had a caused turnover and three GB’s and junior Paul Bitetti (Plainview, N.Y. / Bethpage) came up with a caused turnover.

The Titans will end the Midwest Classic on Sunday as they face tournament host Bellarmine at 3:30 p.m. (EST). That game will have live stats and live video.

Game Notes:
Detroit has lost all three career match-ups with Marquette… The Titans are now 0-8 all-time against ranked teams… This was only the second regular season game played by Detroit at a neutral field as the Titans played Manhattan at Robert Morris in 2009… Weber now has five games in his career with 18 or more saves… Adams extended his NCAA active streak in points to 50-straight games…
