Grip ‘N Rip: Tyler Albrecht, Loyola University (MD)

Tyler Albrecht pic

Grip ‘N Rip just went international! Oakville, Ontario native and current Loyola Greyhound senior midfielder, Tyler Albrecht, gives us the rundown on what he uses for the outdoor and indoor game. As a holiday gift from Tyler and us at LPG, Tyler also took a few pictures of the new Under Armour and Cascade gear that Loyola is using this year. Thanks, Tyler! Starting on the first midfield the past two seasons, Tyler creates mismatches and finds empty space to release his deadly accurate shot. Tyler has 35 goals and 45 points coming into his final season at Loyola.

What head and shaft are you using?

Now that Loyola has switched over to Under Armour for our equipment, I use the UA Command prototype head and the UA scandium shaft.

Do you string your sticks? If not, who does?

I do not string my own sticks. My fellow Canadian Zach Herreweyers has strung my sticks throughout my time at Loyola, however one of our freshman Sammy Edwards strung my most recent one.

What kind of pocket are you using?

My pocket sits in the middle of my stick and I use standard soft mesh, with two nylons and two shooters. I don’t use any whip and didn’t even know what whip was until I came to America.

How do you tape your stick?

Zach tapes my stick before every game. He tapes it half way, and then tapes all the way up to the head as a candy cane.

Do you have any superstitions or funny stories?

Zach taping my stick before every game is my only superstition. We bring hockey tape from home and use that because it’s thicker and stronger.

You grew up playing box in Canada, how does your box setup differ from your field setup?

I use the exact same setup for field as I have my whole life for box. Everyone back home uses soft mesh, which is why I use that here as well.

I’ve seen videos of your team playing box in Loyola’s rec center. Do you feel like you’re miles ahead (skill-wise) of everyone else because of your box background?

My box lacrosse background definitely helps out with little things when our team plays box here, but with that being said we don’t play the exact same rules as back home. We also have a lot of skilled offensive players on the team that I think would do well playing box.

You, Bryan Cole, and Zach Herreweyers are trapped on a deserted island, who would be the first to try and make a lacrosse stick?

Zach would definitely be the first to try and make a lacrosse stick. That guy lives out in the boonies and does nothing other than hunt when he goes home.

Starbucks or Tim Horton’s?

Tim Horton’s. Best coffee place on earth.

Lacrosse Playground

In 2009, Adam O’Neill, Harry Alford and Thomas Alford launched Lacrosse Playground as the preeminent site for lacrosse gearheads. For years Lacrosse Playground provided lacrosse fans with tutorials and tips on how to string a lacrosse head, up-close looks at the gear the top players used and sneak peeks at equipment and uniforms before they were released. More than 10 years and millions of visits later, Lacrosse Playground has relaunched with a focus on storytelling. Our mission is to provide comprehensive coverage of the latest lacrosse news, share insights into the sports betting and fantasy lacrosse world and showcase the lifestyles and personalities of the sport of lacrosse through articles, videos and podcasts.
