Generations Ahead Continuing to lead the way Epoch Lacrosse releases their Gen.4 Dragonfly line-up of carbon fiber shafts

Minneapolis, MN (August 6, 2013) – Epoch Lacrosse is leading the way in performance driven products by utilizing better materials, design and technology. The launch of their Gen.4 product line demonstrates that Epoch is truly generations ahead when it comes to lacrosse shaft technology. “Our Gen.4 line-up is an evolution of the worlds most advanced lacrosse shafts,” said Ryan Hurley, Partner at Epoch Lacrosse. “We have continued to innovate with every new generation since Dragonfly was introduced in 2011. In the last few years, we have advanced technology in lacrosse shafts more than the entire industry has in over a decade,” he added.

As an authentic lacrosse only brand, Epoch has made a significant impact on the lacrosse market in a short amount of time. They know their competition has taken notice and they fully expect to see Dragonfly “clones” enter the market over the next several months. When asked about the competitive environment, James Miceli, Epoch’s Principal said, “we welcome the challenge and embrace our competitors entrance into the carbon fiber market. They have seen how successful our products have been, and with more and more Dragonfly shafts on the field, it was only a matter of time before they jumped into the pool with us. We believe in our technology and our Gen.4 line-up is proof we are far ahead of all new comers entering the carbon fiber market place.“

Feel – Design – Control

The technology incorporated into Epoch Dragonfly Gen.4 shafts is very complex. To keep their message simple, Epoch defines their performance elements into three categories; Feel, Design and Control.

Feel is the most important aspect of a shaft’s performance. “We have said it from the very beginning, if it doesn’t feel right then why even play with it?” said Hurley. Epoch defines feel as a shaft’s weight, texture, shape and overall balance.

Epoch’s designs are world-class and with the launch of their Gen.4 Dragonfly line-up they continue to improve on their Advanced Carbon Layering design, which limits seams and maximizes structural integrity. The shaft design element incorporates a shaft’s materials, strength and durability.

Control is an important aspect of any lacrosse shaft, however it is seldom talked about. For their Gen.4 line-up, Epoch has put a great deal of emphasis on the control players experience with the Dragonfly when shooting and passing. Epoch defines control as accuracy, whip, hold and release point.

Advanced Carbon Layering:

Epoch’s Advanced Carbon Layering (ACL) is what separates their shafts from conventional composite shafts. By layering low F.A.W. (Fiber Areal Weight), uni-directional carbon fiber pre-preg in a specific manner, Epoch can control several aspects of the shaft’s performance, including flex, durability, weight and release point. Hand-crafted by highly skilled craftsman, Epoch pays particular attention to the specific angle each sheet of carbon fiber is orientated. If carbon fibers move as little as 10 ° off their intended axis their strength properties can be reduced by 40% or more.

Epoch places a great deal of energy into insuring their carbon fiber layup process is world-class. “As an authentic lacrosse brand, we put a great deal of emphasis on the quality of construction of our shafts and they are backed by an industry 1-year warranty,” says Miceli

Flex

Epoch achieves flex properties without sacrificing materials by manipulating the orientation of the carbon fiber. This technique allows Epoch shafts to feel sturdy when passing or shooting. Epoch does not view flex as a technology, but rather a result of technology. With their A.C.L technique, Epoch can manipulate and vary the amount a shaft can flex offering a variety of performance benefits.

90∘ Fibers
Allows for maximum energy transfer through the shaft to the head creating a powerful release. A shafts vertical flex can be altered by manipulating the 90-degree fibers.
The 90-degree fibers are critical in shaft design to allow for impact durability from stick checks. Additionally, 90-degree fibers reinforce the shafts “Hoop Strength” helping to manage the structural integrity of the sidewall while preventing dents.

0∘ Fibers
Zero degree fibers provide consistent flexural integrity along the length of the shaft, preventing the shaft from feeling like a “noodle” while passing and shooting. The control of lateral flex helps keep the shaft from flexing side-to-side.

+/- 45∘ Fibers
Provide incredible torsional stability, limiting twisting, for improved accuracy.

Conventional composite shafts, marketed with “flex”, often use fiberglass to increase the bend-ability. Fiberglass is a cheaper and less durable material that is often misused to increase a shaft’s bendability.

Flex iQ

To help players identify what type of performance they desire from their shaft, Epoch has created the Flex iQ system. Miceli explains, “often manufacturers use proprietary methods to measure the amount of flex present in a shaft. The shaft is then marketed under a number that represents that measurement. This is often confusing for players, parents and retailers and can make the purchase process challenging. With Epoch’s Flex iQ system the decision process has been simplified.” Flex iQ is open source and Epoch hopes other manufacturers and retailers adopt it in an effort to help develop verses overcomplicate the industry.

For those who don’t like a lot of whip, Epoch recommends a shaft with a lower Flex iQ. If a player prefers a bendy shaft (lots of flex), with increased whip and hold, a higher number Flex iQ is recommended. Those looking for the solid all around performing shaft should look for a number five Flex iQ.

Uniform Release:

Often referred to as “kick point” in other sports such as hockey and golf, Epoch’s Uniform Release insures a shaft’s feel and performance is consistent, regardless of hand position, when shooting and passing.

Sliver is the new White.

Epoch’s Gen.4 product line continues the tradition of clean, crisp and simple cosmetics. “These shafts look as good as they perform,” said Brian Hochman, Lead Designer at Epoch Lacrosse. “We established a unique look with the introduction of the Dragonfly shaft in 2011, that we have continued with our Gen. 4 line-up. However, we added an element of boldness to Gen. 4 with the Epoch green stripe. These shafts really “pop” both on the retail floor and on the field.”

Another change for Epoch is their migration away from their iconic white cosmetic to the newly introduced sharp looking silver option, which compliments the black cosmetic. “When we introduced the white in 2011 we turned a lot of heads and it will always be Epoch’s signature. But with 2014 upon us, we wanted to continue moving forward and decided to put white on the shelf for a while. We may bring it back as a special edition to remind us of yesteryear, but for now silver is the new white,” added Hochman.
