Nearly half of Monmouth’s MAAC Student Athletes carry 3.2 GPA or better

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – Monmouth University had 167 student-athletes named to the 2013-14 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Academic Honor Roll from its 15 league sponsored sports.

To be eligible for the MAAC Academic Honor Roll, a student-athlete must hold a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or higher on a 4.0 scale. Monmouth, in its first year in the MAAC, placed 167 student-athletes on the list, including 97 female athletes and 75 male athletes.

“The most important thing we do is educate our student-athletes,” said Vice President and Director of Athletics Dr. Marilyn McNeil. “We are very proud of our students’ achievements in the classroom, which matches their performances on the field.”

Monmouth sponsors 21 varsity sports, including football and women’s bowling, which are not sponsored by the conference. Within the conference sponsored sport programs, nearly half of Monmouth’s student-athletes garnered recognition on the MAAC’s Academic Honor Roll.

On the women’s side, the cross country/track & field team had 28 members, the soccer team had 19 members, the lacrosse squad had 18 members, the basketball team had 11 members, the field hockey team had seven members, both the softball team and tennis team had six members, and the golf team had two members.
